Boston left fielder cleared to play by psychiatrists The Associated Press BOSTON — Wilfredo Cordero has been cleared to resume play ing by the two psychiatrists who evaluated Boston’s left fielder af ter he was accused of assaulting his wife. The doctors, Robert Millman and Joel Solomon, notified the players’ association and manage ment’s Player Relations Commit tee that Cordero is fit to return to the Red Sox as soon as Thursday night. Boston general manager Dan Duquette “has been in communi cation with the doctors and they’re still working on it,” Red Sox spokesman Kevin Shea said Wednesday. Asked if Cordero would play Thursday in the opener of a four game series against Toronto, Shea said, “He hasn’t played for 17 [ac tually 19] games. Whether he’s ready, I don’t know.” Manager Jimy Williams said he couldn’t comment on whether Cordero would rejoin the team Thursday. Cordero was arrested early on the morning of June 11 for al legedly assaulting his wife, Ana, whose nose was bloodied. He was released on bail, with a court date set for July 24, and missed eight games before playing the next six at Detroit and Toronto. But he has missed all 11 since then after a newspaper report cit ed papers filed in a divorce pro ceeding by his former wife, Wan da, saying that he had beaten her on several occasions. Cordero was not among about a half-dozen players who attended an optional workout at Fenway Park on Wednesday, the end of the three-day All-Star break. “Having him on the team is not a problem,” Red Sox chief execu tive officer John Harrington said Tuesday before the All-Star game in Cleveland. “We put him on waivers and teams asked about him, but we’re not trying to trade him. He’s a great player.” Once Cordero agreed last week to participate in a counseling pro gram developed by Millman and Solomon, Harrington said, “I have no problem having him on the team.” Millman, who was retained by the commissioner’s office, and Solomon, retained by the union, were charged with setting up a long-term counseling program for Cordero under an agreement by which he would return to work. Cordero, who usually bats third, is hitting .300 with 11 home runs and 41 RBIs in 280 at-bats. But the team is in last place in the AL East with a 38-48 record. It is 10-9 without Cordero. The Red Sox could have two of their other top hitters back Thurs day, Tim Naehring and Mo Vaughn. Williams said Wednes day he hadn’t ruled out using Naehring in that game, while Vaughn had set it as a target for his return from arthroscopic knee surgery that has sidelined him since June 16. It appeared, though, that Naehring might play a few games at Pawtucket of the International League before returning to Boston’s lineup.
